Navy Seals Disciplined for Sharing Information

Medal of Honor: Warfighter is the newest video game in Electronic Arts’ popular
series, and it’s boasting the use of real commando consultants to make it realistic.
The problem with that is that SEALs are supposed to be “silent warriors who shun
the spotlight.”

SEAL Team Six gained major publicity recently for being the team that killed Osama
bin Laden. Two days this past spring and summer, seven members of the team took
on paid consulting jobs for EA, using classified material to make the game more
realistic.

Four other active team members who are no longer part of the same unit are under
investigation. Thought the game does not attempt to recreate the Bin Laden raid, it
includes other very realistic missions based on the SEALs’ experiences in the Middle
East. At this time, it’s not clear how many or which confidential secrets may have
been revealed to the game developers.

The members of Team Six who contributed to the game have been punished have
possibly lost their chances for career advancement and promotion. They’ve all
receive letters of reprimand and have had their pay cut in half for two months.

Despite these harsh punishments, the SEALs as a whole don’t seem to be shying
away from Hollywood’s attention. They have received a mountain of national
attention, some of which has now been approved by the head of the Special
Operations Command, Admiral William McRaven.

The SEALs’ Team Six is to be featured in two upcoming movies that will chronicle
two separate incidents. One is the bin Laden raid and the other is a rescue mission
for a ship captain kidnapped by Somali pirates.
