A teenage boy from Baker city, Oregon, shot and killed two men in his hunting party on Thursday night. One of the men was the boy’s foster
father. The boy, 14, tried to leave the
scene but accidentally shot himself in the leg, forcing him to return for help.
The incident took place in or near a small cabin in the
remote woods outside of the Umatilla National Forest on Thursday night. After the shooter returned with an injury one
of the other party members bound him to a chair. The surviving member then drove to the small
town of Granite to call for help. Police
arrived on the scene shortly after 1:00 a.m. and found the two bloody bodies
and the teen taped to a chair.
The suspect was taken to a hospital in Baker City, and then
flown to Boise, Idaho for treatment. He is expected to recover from his
injuries. The boy’s name has not been
released due to his age, according to police.
Sheriff Glenn Palmer said that two guns were used to murder Michael Pete (43) and
Kenneth Gilliland (64). He would not say
if a motive had been established. It
also has not been revealed if the suspect will be charged or what with. Whether the shooting was an accident has not
been ruled out.
It is the first full week of deer hunting season in
Oregon. Hunters are allowed one male
deer or elk with at least two points on their antlers. It is unclear how long the men were out on
the hunting trip or whether there was tension among party members.
