98-Year-Old Woman Evicted From Her Apartment After 50 Years

A 98-year-old woman in San Francisco is being evicted from the apartment she has lived in for 50 years due to the Ellis Act. The building’s owners are wanting to take advantage of the city’s “booming” real estate market. 

“I’ve been very happy here,” Mary Phillips told KRON 4. “I’ve always paid my rent, I’ve never been late.”
Protestors gathered on Wednesday at the owner’s office building to support Phillips. They are asking for an end to the Ellis Act, which is a state law that gives landlords the unconditional right to evict tenants to get out of the rental business.

“They’re going to have to take me out of here feet first," she told KRON. 

“Just because of your age, don’t let people push you around.
Urban Green Investments has purchased a number of buildings in San Francisco, has evicted its residents through the Ellis Act, and is reselling the buildings for profit.

Urban Green Investments has not responded to any comments. 

Many people being evicted from these apartments are low income families and seniors – who are probably not in the best state to find a new apartment fast.
