The man accused
of killing a Washington, D.C. businessman, his wife, son, and housekeeper, was
captured by police on Thursday and faces arraignment today.
Daron Wint, 34,
will face charges of first degree murder in the District of Columbia Superior
Court.
Wint is a suspect
in the murder of Savvas Savopoulos, his wife Amy, their son Phillip, and their
housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, whose bodies were found on May 14 in the family
mansion. The Savopouloses lived in the same
neighborhood as Vice President Joe Biden.
The house had been set on fire after an aide reportedly delivered
$40,000 in cash the day before.
Wint became a
suspect when his DNA was recovered from a crust of pizza found in the
house. He had previously worked for the
family, but police have not explained why he might have wanted to kill the
family. Wint came to the U.S. from
Guyana in 2000, joined the Marines, and worked as a certified welder. He was an ex-convict with a criminal record.
Savopoulos was
the CEO of American Iron Works, where Wint had been employed as a welder in the
past.
The victims had
been stabbed or bludgeoned to death before the fire was set, according to
authorities. Based in Hyattsville,
Maryland, the company supplies construction materials and had been involved
with several significant projects in downtown Washington, D.C.
Police have not ruled out that others, including those
captured with Wint on Thursday, were somehow involved with the murders. No other suspects have been identified at
this time, however.
The Savopoulos family thanked the police for the arrest in
a recent statement. “While it does not
abate our pain, we hope that it begins to restore a sense of calm and security
to our neighborhood and our city,” the
statement said.
