Two Virginia Tech students are
being held without bail as they face trial for the kidnapping and murder of
13-year-old Nicole Lovell. David Eisenhauer, 18, is charged with kidnapping
and murdering the local girl, and Natalie Keepers, 19, is charged with
helping Eisenhauer to transport and conceal the body. Lovell, who was from the
college town of Blacksburg, was found 90 miles south of her home in North
Carolina.
As of their initial hearing neither
student had entered a plea. Their lawyers have issued no statements yet. The
charges could result in a sentence of 20 years to life for Eisenhauer, and 5
years for Keepers.
Both of the accused have been
described as good students and good kids. Eisenhauer was a popular track star
in high school and on the Track team at Virginia Tech, while Keepers was
involved in theater and volunteering while in high school.
The next court date is set for
March 28th. At that time more should be learned about the case. The
arrest warrant detailed that a gun had not been used in the murder, but other
than that the cause of death is not yet known. An autopsy has been performed but
the details will not be released until they come up in trial.
It is still unclear what
motivations either of the accused had for the crimes. The nature of the
relationship between Eisenhauer and Lovell remains a mystery. According to the
victim’s mother, Tammy Weeks, the two may have met via social media, and investigators
have said that the two knew each other in some capacity before the murder.
Neither Weeks nor the police
have agreed to speak more openly about the case at this point. As for Keepers,
police have not yet clarified how she became involved in the case.
