In 2014 Kesha filed suit against Dr. Luke, accusing him of using drugs and alcohol to sexually assault her, then using the threat of ruining her career to keep her silent. It’s a story that, in model if not detail, is shared by many women in the world today.
Kesha is contracted to work with Dr. Luke on at least six songs on each album she produces and she doesn’t want to work with him. The result is that she isn’t recording anything, which could end up being a devastating blow to her career.
A New York judge ruled that she could not be let out of her contract, which pushed fans and some of her peers to move to Twitter with the hashtag #FreeKesha, and even moved Taylor Swift to donate $250,000 dollars to her legal team.
Dr. Luke, of course, claims that he never assaulted Kesha, but that she instead made up the accusations in order to renegotiate her contract. It’s a response that is neither surprising nor unique.
Women who accuse men of such actions are frequently decried as liars, and if at all possible, the defense accuses them of being greedy. Just look at all the women who accused Bill Cosby of similar crimes.
Kesha’s legal team insists she is not trying to break her contract. She doesn’t want to record songs with the man who assaulted her, which doesn’t seem like much to ask. She doesn’t seem to be trying to “renegotiate” her contract, just to get away from a man who harmed her.
