Today I’m grateful for many good things in my life. I’m also grateful for the rule of law. The World Justice Project describes the rule of law in four universal principles.

Accountability: Both the government and private actors are accountable under the law.

Just laws: The laws are clear, publicized, stable, and just. They’re applied evenly and protect fundamental rights, including the security of persons and property and certain core human rights.

Open government: The process by which the laws are enacted, administered, and enforced are accessible, fair, and efficient.

Accessible and impartial dispute resolution: Justice is delivered in a timely manner by competent, ethical, and independent representatives and neutrals. These representatives and neutrals are accessible, have adequate resources, and reflect the makeup of the communities they serve.

These principles were developed in accordance with internationally accepted standards and norms, and were tested and refined in consultation with a wide variety of experts worldwide.

Let us hope that our nation continues to be governed by the rule of law.
