Will DC help Maryland's Same Sex Marriage Campaign?

Many people are interested in whether Washington DC gays will give their support to Maryland's same sex marriage law. The question was raised after Freedom to Marry hosted a fundraiser in Washington DC declaring their support for same sex couples in Maine. Matt McTighe, the campaign director acknowledged that he is planning similar fundraising events across the country, including Maryland.

There has already been dialogue between the group and LGBT lawmakers in parts of Maryland. Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler predicted that lawmakers would pass a same sex marriage bill in the near future. Marylanders for Marriage Equality has faced criticism the last few weeks from people who feel that the campaign has not been effective enough in defending the state's same sex marriage law.

Marylanders for Marriage Equality unveiled a new web site shortly after state officials certified a petition that will lead to a November referendum. They are currently trying to raise money to defend the law. Many insiders believe that Marylanders for Marriage Equality must raise between $10 million and $12 million to defend the law. They remain unsure as to whether Washington's homosexual community will help out or not.
